Born Woodward Maurice Ritter on January 12, 1905, in Murvaul, Texas, Tex Ritter grew up immersed in the rich tapestry of rural Texas culture. Raised on the family farm and schooled in Texas—from grade school in Carthage to graduation from South Park High School in Beaumont—Ritter’s early life laid the foundation for his passion for music and storytelling. He briefly explored academic paths, studying pre-law and government at the University of Texas at Austin, yet the call of music proved too strong to ignore.
Rise to Stardom:
Tex Ritter’s talent found its way to the microphone in the late 1920s when he began his career on radio, initially captivating Houston audiences with cowboy songs. His move to New York City opened doors to Broadway, where he was cast in productions such as The New Moon and later Green Grow the Lilacs—the latter forming the basis for the legendary musical Oklahoma!.
