Tex Ritter Biography:

Early Life & Formation:
Born Woodward Maurice Ritter on January 12, 1905, in Murvaul, Texas, Tex Ritter grew up immersed in the rich tapestry of rural Texas culture. Raised on the family farm and schooled in Texas—from grade school in Carthage to graduation from South Park High School in Beaumont—Ritter’s early life laid the foundation for his passion for music and storytelling. He briefly explored academic paths, studying pre-law and government at the University of Texas at Austin, yet the call of music proved too strong to ignore.

Rise to Stardom:
Tex Ritter’s talent found its way to the microphone in the late 1920s when he began his career on radio, initially captivating Houston audiences with cowboy songs. His move to New York City opened doors to Broadway, where he was cast in productions such as The New Moon and later Green Grow the Lilacs—the latter forming the basis for the legendary musical Oklahoma!. This period marked the start of a long and influential career in both music and film.

Film & Recording Career:
In 1936, Ritter made his film debut in Song of the Gringo, and over the years, he graced over 70 movies, often embodying the quintessential singing cowboy. His rich baritone became a symbol of authenticity in Western cinema. Concurrently, Ritter established a stellar recording career, notably becoming the first artist signed by Capitol Records in 1942. His timeless hits—most famously his rendition of "The Ballad of High Noon"—secured his place in music history and resonated with audiences across the nation.

Legacy & Influence:
Tex Ritter’s contributions went beyond his innovative music and memorable film roles. He helped shape the sound of traditional country music and influenced generations of artists. As the patriarch of the renowned Ritter acting family—including his son John Ritter and grandsons Jason and Tyler Ritter—his legacy continues to reverberate in both the music and entertainment industries. Tex Ritter passed away on January 2, 1974, in Nashville, Tennessee, but his imprint on country music remains indelible.
